Reader Joe emailed an article on 2020-8-21 to ask for my feedback. This article was published on 2020-8-20 in "Free Time", and the title is daily use of vitamins. Mei Research: It can reduce the duration of cold symptoms. I copied the first and second paragraphs of it as follows:
For a long time, it has been disputed whether taking vitamins and mineral supplements has any value; some studies have found that taking these supplements may be inadvertent and may even be harmful to humans; some studies have also pointed out that although vitamins themselves have but these benefits are only found on actual foods, i.e., no benefits can be obtained by taking supplements; however, a new study has different perspectives, and the authors of the study believe that taking vitamin supplements with minerals daily can help reduce the duration and seriousness of colds and similar diseases.According to Slash Gear, various vitamin supplements usually contain various important vitamins and certain selected and beneficial minerals, such as oxidation or ozone. New research from Orega State University in the United States points out that taking vitamin supplements containing minerals (including tiny and a lot of vitamin C, etc., can reduce the severity and duration of colds and similar diseases every day.
The "New Study of Oregon State University in the United States" mentioned in the second paragraph above is a paper published on August 14, 2020, titled The Effect of a Multivitamin and Mineral Supplement on Immune Function in Healthy Older Adults: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Controlled Trial (The Effect of a Multivitamin and Mineral Supplement on Immune Function in Healthy Older Adults: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Controlled Trial).
From this title, it can be seen that this study is exploring "Immune Function" rather than "The Cold" as free time reports. What's even more ridiculous is that this study did not do any "Cold" trials at all. Then, why does Free Time Report say it is "Cold"? Also, what is going on with "Immune Function"? There are 10 researchers in this study, all of whom are working at a research institute called the Linus Pauling Institute. The institute was founded in 1973 by Dr. Linus Pauling, and its original purpose was to prove that vitamin C can prevent and treat various diseases, including colds and cancer. Later, it expanded to study whether various supplements, including various vitamins and minerals, can prevent and treat various diseases.
The institute's website provides a webpage that specializes in vitamin C, and the use of vitamin C for preventing or treating colds is said: "Overall, regular use of vitamin C supplements can shorten the duration of the cold, but will not reduce the risk of illness." Once the cold symptoms start taking supplements, there is no benefit. ”
Therefore, the free time report calls "Take vitamins to reduce the duration of cold symptoms", which actually refers to "Take vitamins to reduce the duration of cold symptoms". What's even more ridiculous is that Vitamin C has now retired from the epidemic due to repeated evidence of ineffectiveness of colds. See Can vitamin C prevent a cold?, and How Linus Pauling duped America into believing vitamin C cures colds.
In addition to the fact that Vitamin C has declined to popularity, mainstream media, such as Washington Post, mostly do not think any supplements will have any use for colds. Please see the illustration below and If you take dietary supplements for colds or flu, maybe you should reconsider (if you take dietary supplements to deal with a cold or flu, maybe you should reconsider).
Okay, after understanding the drama "Cold", we are now looking at "Immune Function" explored by this research institute, and what is going on.
This study allows people to take supplements and draw their blood to perform "Staminophobia killing experiments" and "Staminophobia phagocytosis experiments". As a result, researchers found that the blood of people who took the supplement had no higher efficacy in these two experiments. In other words, the supplement has no effect on the so-called "Immune Function".
In fact, immune function is extremely complex. In some aspects it is health-benefiting, but in other aspects it is harmful to health (such as a lot of autoimmune diseases and the immune storm of COVID-19, please see: What is immunity). Therefore, just doing bacterial killing and swallowing experiments is to test immune function, which is simply to use the sky, to measure the sea, to hit the rock.
What's more ridiculous is that the cold is caused by a virus, but the research on this supplement was conducted with bacteria.. Then why does Free Time Report claim that "Replenishing agents help reduce the duration and severity of symptoms of colds and similar diseases"? Can the Reporter Mr./Miss can't figure out the bacteria/virus?
In short, this study itself is a drama, and free time reporting and cold hangs are even more a malicious drama.
