Canine distemper is a relatively dangerous disease that spreads quickly. It mostly occurs in dogs and has a relatively high mortality rate. So, do you know how to tell if your dog has canine distemper?
1. Judgment by symptoms
When a dog is infected with the canine distemper virus, it will develop symptoms such as listlessness, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, runny nose, cough, increased eye and nose secretions, and in the later stages of canine distemper, neurological symptoms such as unsteady walking and convulsions will appear. If your dog is found to have the above symptoms, it is likely to have canine distemper. It is recommended to go to the pet hospital for examination and treatment in time.
2. Measure body temperature
Canine distemper will also cause the dog's body temperature to show biphasic fever, which mainly shows that the body temperature first rises, then returns to normal and then rises again. The body temperature will rise to about 40 degrees at the beginning of the illness, drop to normal levels after 1-2 days, and rise again after 2-3 days. In this regard, the owner can measure the dog's body temperature and observe whether the dog has bidirectional fever, whether it has a fever in the morning and evening, and is slightly better at noon. If so, the dog has canine distemper and needs timely medical treatment.
3. Purchase canine distemper test paper for testing
If the dog's symptoms and body temperature still cannot be judged well, the owner can go to the pet hospital to purchase canine distemper test paper for testing. You only need to collect the dog's feces or eye, nose and mouth secretions for dilution testing. First of all, there is a cotton swab in the small test paper box. You can dip the cotton swab into the diluent. After moistening it, collect the fecal secretions from the dog's anus. After diluting it with the diluent, drop the diluent on the test paper plate and let it sit for 10 minutes. If it shows two lines, it is positive, which means the dog is infected with canine distemper.
Note: If the owner suspects that the dog has canine distemper, it is recommended to take the dog to the pet hospital for examination in time, because canine distemper is the number one infectious disease for dogs, with a mortality rate as high as 95%. If not treated in time, the dog's life may be in danger.
